Phlebitis

Phlebitis is an inflammation/or small clot of the superficial veins which cause irritation. It isn't a life threatening condition.


Signs & Symptoms

Pain and/or redness over the vein

The affected vein feels like a firm tender cord

Warm or increased temperature over the affected vein

Diagnosis

Physician's Examination infoA health care provider investigates the body of a patient for signs of disease. Together with the medical history, the physical examination aids in determining the correct diagnosis and devising the treatment plan. This data then becomes part of the medical record.

Venous Ultrasound infoA form of medical ultrasonography (medical application of ultrasound technology) to visualize internal anatomical structures. It uses transmission and reflection of ultrasound waves to visualize the veins of the leg from outside the body (with the help of gel which helps transmission of the sound waves).

Elevate the leg

Apply warm moist heat to the area

Antibiotics

Wear support stockings

Non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory medication can be taken to relieve some of he discomfort if there are no other contraindications.
