Vascular Diseases: Veins

Veins

Veins carry blood back to the heart. The vein wall isn't as strong as the artery wall because the blood doesn't flow back to the heart as fast or as forceful. Veins have valves to help prevent the blood from flowing backward, away from the heart. When the valves fail, varicose veins and venous ulcers can develop.
